Helen Harris and Lindsey were raised by their older sister, Jenny, after their mother died when Helen was seven. Now working as an executive assistant to the CEO of a prestigious modeling agency in Manhattan, Helen enjoys a sweet Manhattan lifestyle that keeps her very busy and content. But her world suddenly changes when Lindsey and her husband, Paul, die in a car accident, leaving their three children behind.
Helen and Jenny are shocked to discover that Lindsey and Paul have left Helen guardian of their three children: Audrey, 15, Henry, 10, and Sarah, 5. method. But the letter Lindsey left for Helen convinces her to take care of them. She tries to do it on her own terms: upbringing while maintaining her already fast-paced agenda. But as work and the children begin to interfere, Helen soon finds herself burnt out and frustrated with her responsibilities and Jenny’s lack of faith.
Despite her already busy schedule, Helen finds time to develop a genuine affection for her new dependents, as well as an equally genuine attraction to Dan Parker, the headmaster of the children’s school and local Lutheran pastor. Busy trying to appease the children and adjust to being a mother all of a sudden, Helen’s focus on her job begins to slip and Dominic fires her.
