Two planes collided mid-air at the Wings of Dallas Air Show at Dallas Executive Airport on Saturday afternoon.

The accident happened during the WWII Wings Over Dallas Exposition at 1:25 p.m.

The footage shows the planes hitting each other at low altitude, smashing one of the planes in half. A fireball can be seen hitting the ground.

The two planes – one of them a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress – were taking part in a memorial air show near Dallas.

Firefighters said there were no injuries among the people on the ground.

“The Boeing B17 Flying Fortress and a Bell B63 King Cobra collided and crashed at the Wings Over Dallas Air Show at Dallas Executive Airport, Texas, around 1:20 p.m. local time on Saturday,” the FAA said. “At this time, it is unknown how many people were on both planes.”

The Allied Pilots Association, which represents American Airlines pilots, said Terry Parker and Lyn Root — two of its former members — were among those who died in the collision.

Eyewitness Chris Kratoville – who was one of 4,000 and 6,000 who gathered to watch the Wings Over Dallas Airshow on Saturday – told the BBC he had “never seen a quieter or more crowded audience in the blink of an eye”.

“It went from being a rather enthusiastic and lively crowd… To complete silence and stillness, and a lot of people, including me, turned their children toward them and away from the airport. Because there was burning debris in the middle of the airport.”

The FAA said it would investigate the accident during the three-day event. Which bills itself as the United States’ first air show of. World War II and held in honor of Veterans Day.
