Now that it’s aired, I think it’s finally safe to say it honestly: The Last of Us Episode 3 is the best episode of TV that’s aired in a very long time.

A complete change of pace from the first two episodes. The Last of Us Episode III takes a notable chunk of the game and expands on the entire story.

This is one of the four episodes I pre-saw before writing my The Last of Us review, and it’s… well, that’s the spoiler-free section of the article. So, all I will say here is that this episode convinced me to start my “Best TV Episodes of 2023” list.

Episode 3 review and recap: “Three became two”

Our weary travelers, having lost Tess, who bravely sacrificed herself at the end of The Last of Us Episode 2. Are at a creek 10 miles west of Boston to start this week. Joe is soaking his hand, which is still bloody and sore, possibly from beating the soldier to death at the end of episode 1.

Ellie offers Joel her jacket, getting no response. He’s still mourning Tess in her own way. But she’s talking enough about being in the woods for both of them. Then, once he yells at her. She Ellie pushes him away, preemptively telling him not to blame her for this trip. It’s not her fault she was taken away. Joel nods slightly, and the two set off on a five-hour hike to Bill and Frank’s house. They drive through the scenic wilderness, to meditative music. And Joel reveals that Frank is the good guy of the pair.

Ellie examines the body, like Sid playing with a figure in Toy Story, before stabbing him in the head.

Joel’s bruise jokes ensue, with Ellie asking if Joel sucks at shooting or “life in general.” Showing a sense of humor for once, Joel takes the latter option. He then he doesn’t even let her finish and ask for a gun. In a scene straight out of the games, the two rummage through Cumberland Farms.

Ellie offers a passionate ode to Mileena from Mortal Kombat, while Joel can’t find the things he left behind. Then, upon finding the rarest video game loot (tampons), Ellie lets out a “fuck yeah!” before she runs into an immobilized infected. She then examines the body, like Sid playing with a figure in Toy Story, before stabbing him in the head.

Along the way, Ellie and Joel come across the wreckage of a crashed plane (this was the first shot of the game to be released), and she’s impressed that he was able to enjoy air travel, a part of the story that is not available to her. Ellie then has too many questions about the origin of the Cordyceps pandemic, and her frustration with her own education gives Joel a moment to educate with the version of the story (contaminated food) that he learned.

Ellie makes her way to see something she shouldn’t: a veritable skeletal graveyard. Joel tells her about evacuations where people were told they were going to a quarantine zone. But there wasn’t enough room for everyone. When Ellie notes that these people weren’t sick before they were killed. Joel grimly states that “dead people can’t get infected.” Ellie shudders grimly and nods.
