In 2013, an outbreak of the mutant fungus Cordyceps devastated the United States, turning its human hosts into aggressive creatures known as contagion. In suburban Austin, Texas, Joel (Troy Baker) is fleeing the chaos with his brother Tommy (Jeffrey Pierce) and daughter Sarah (Hannah Hayes). As they flee, Sarah is shot by a soldier and dies in Joel’s arms.
Twenty years later, civilization has been decimated by infection. The survivors live in areas of totalitarian quarantine, independent settlements, and nomadic groups, leaving abandoned buildings and homes. Joel works as a smuggler with his partner Tess (Annie Werching) in the Quarantine District in the North End of Boston, Massachusetts. They hunt down Robert (Robin Atkin Downes), a black marketeer, to recover a stolen cache of weapons. Before Tess kills him, Robert reveals that he traded the stash with the Fireflies, a rebel militia that opposes the Quarantine Zone’s authorities.
