We are reviewing the Netflix Slumberland movie, which does not contain any significant spoilers.
There have been many films recently that have explored grief in different ways, and slumberland He does it through dreams. In this movie, A.J A young girl discovers a secret map to the dream world of Slumberland and, with the help of an eccentric outlaw, traverses dreams and escapes nightmares in hopes of being able to see her late father again.
Some moments guys Nemo (Marlo Barclay) The dreamlike fantasy establishes her grief. The story works when Nemo is actually with her uncle Philip (Chris O’Dowd). Trying to navigate her father’s death is one thing, but bonding with a fantastical dream world with him is her comfort. her dad Peter (Kyle Chandler)He tells her wonderful stories and shares his time in Slumberland.
Share his experiences, and that’s the only thing you remember him for. Therefore, in order to feel close to her father again, she enters the world. There you meet Faces (Jason Momoa), and he is a very mysterious character. He is irritable, friendly and a little rude.
Nemo had to start doing things on her own without her father, which was very difficult. She had to move to school, and since she was so young, she needed to find a guardian. She felt more at home in Slumberland than she had with her Uncle Philip.
The movie takes a while to kick in and there are some adventurous bits to pick up the pace, but in the end it just felt like a drag. The story is not engaging and only resonates with audiences when Nemo explores and heals her own grief. These are the best moments in the movie. Even Momoa’s great performance as Flint didn’t add much to the wonder of Slumberland.
There is also a great deal of explanation involved in defining the land, rather than showing viewers what it consists of. It seems the story wasn’t as balanced as it could have been. They spend a lot of time in the fantasy world trying to explain Flint’s relationship to her father and what they used to do. There are many rules in Slumberland that fit into the narrative but it is for convenience that some things work.
The special effects were mostly strong and had that childlike appeal, but for some reason, something was missing. There is a level of connection to the characters that should have been there but just wasn’t. It comes down to the writing of the film and if the lines of dialogue are believable enough that the audience connects emotionally with Nemo and the loss of her father.
Sometimes things can get a little tangled up in a fantasy story like this one, and the execution of some sentiment can get lost in the grand scheme of things.
