Slumberland End Explained – What Happened With Flip?

There are some strong emotional beats between Nemo and Flip as they both explore their relationship with Peter. In their quest to find the pearl that allows the user to desire anything they want in Slumberland, they begin to see some similarities.

Flip and Nemo have been linked for many years and they discover what that bond is. At the start of this movie, before Peter dies, the last bedtime story he shares with Nemo is about him having an adventure with Flip.

At first, Nemo didn’t think he was real until she bumped into Flip. Peter chose to stay out of Slumberland and his adventures when he had a family, but Flip found a way to stay in the dream world and didn’t wake up in the real world for three decades.

The shift in this movie comes as a shock because how can someone stay asleep for so long?

After decades lost in the dream world, he has forgotten who he is in the real world and has no memory of his life before he was Flip.

While getting to know her Uncle Philip, Nemo finds that he is the complete opposite of her father. Almost as if he had forgotten who he was. It wasn’t until they were watching some old home videos that Nemo made the connection that Flip was her Uncle Philip.

As Philip tells her stories of his imaginary adventures with Peter, he expresses that his outlaw name was Flip and he used that in their childhood games together.

So the loss is doubly so in this story, Nemo lost her father, and Philip lost his brother long ago. He was never the same. While grieving, Nemo tells Philip that her father never forgot those adventures and cherished them, using those memories to tell her bedtime stories every night.

After Nemo discovers the truth about Flip, she returns to Slumberland to rescue him from the Bureau of Subconscious Activities. They arrested him because he was altering other people’s dreams and they didn’t want him to.

Nemo saves him and tells him the truth about his identity. And he’s sad to learn he’s become a boring doorknob salesman. They dive into the Sea of Nightmares to retrieve the pearl so that Nemo can see her father again. Flip also does something strange and refuses to use the pearl to wish he was awake.

In the real world, Philip deals with Nemo sleeping all day and in Slumberland, Flip forces her to wake up. She runs away from her uncle’s house and starts rowing back to the lighthouse where she used to live with her father, but a storm hits and she takes the oar out.

Since they are at sea in the dream world, the parallel of them being unconscious in reality makes sense. While Flip tries to help her, Philp is also on the move.

In the end, Nemo learns that whatever happens in life happens, and she can’t bring anyone back. So the film shows the grieving process in a subtle way. Instead of using the pearl for herself, she uses it to awaken Flip.

The end of this movie shows Nemo choosing to wake up in the real world, ready for her own adventure. There is also a level of connection between Flip and Philip that combines reality and the world of dreams, so they will see each other again.
