Throwaway or hidden-city ticketing is when you book a multi-stop flight but do not complete the itinerary, i.e. throw away your ticket, to save money. Skiplagged has packaged this method of booking flights into an online flight and travel search engine that you can use to book cheap flights and hotels.
However, how it finds and displays cheap flights differs significantly from that of other online travel agencies (OTAs) such as Priceline and Expedia.

How Does Skiplagged Work?
Skiplagged uses the idea of skiplagging or throwaway ticketing and simplifies the process of finding those hidden deals.
This concept is best illustrated by an example:
Assume you want to travel from Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) to Atlanta (ATL), but the prices are prohibitively expensive.
There is, however, a much lower priced flight from Minneapolis to Orlando (MCO) with a stop in Atlanta.
The term “hidden-city ticketing” refers to purchasing a ticket with no aim of flying to the final destination of Orlando. Instead, you’d exit in Atlanta and skip the second segment entirely.

You’re probably already planning all the ways this could go wrong in your head. There are a few, to be sure.
Consider these “rules of skiplagging” before using this method on your next trip.
- It is only applicable to one-way tickets. This is most likely the most crucial aspect of hidden-city ticketing. The rules are the same for any flight: if you miss a segment, the rest of your reservation will be canceled. So if you get off a round-trip flight halfway through, you won’t be able to return home. To make a round trip using this method, you’d need to book two separate one-way tickets.
- Don’t bother checking a bag. Your checked bag is unaware that it is supposed to depart early. You can only bring a carry-on if you skiplag. And pack light — if the gate agents insist on checking bags on an overcrowded flight, you’re out of luck.
- Don’t let it become a habit. For good reason, airlines despise this tactic. They may be concerned that you will miss that second flight you are purposefully skipping and may call your name or hold the doors open in the hopes that you will make it. More importantly, airlines believe that passengers who do this violate the terms of their “contract of carriage.”
