I read the novel Red, White, and Royal Blue, by Casey McQuiston, when it first came out in 2019, and have re-read it many times since. It remains the gold standard for gay romance even today, in this new peak of romance novels. Set against the backdrop of a presidential election, the love story between a president’s son. And an English prince is heartwarming, infuriating. And ridiculously funny–the perfect blend of relativism and escapism.
The movie, which Lopez directed and co-wrote with Ted Malar, doesn’t quite live up to the hype. This cinematic presidential race is like Whose Line Is It Anyway? Where everything is made up and points don’t matter. The book is fictional, but its emotionally complex and deeply relatable characters make it grounded. The movie cuts out most of that complexity and realism, and then Edward Scissorhands goes for whatever reality is left.
