A hiker died after falling from a waterfall along the Blue Ridge Trail in North Carolina over the weekend, according to the U.S. National Park Service.

Nancy Sampson, of Greer, South Carolina, was hiking in the park at about 12:15 p.m. on Saturday when she fell down the slope around the Glassmine Falls overlook.

A press release from Blue Ridge Parkway officials said that on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at approximately 12:15 p.m., National Park Service (NPS) dispatch operators received a report of a woman who had fallen down a steep slope at Glassmine Falls. Overlook mile 361.

NPS Law Enforcement Rangers arrived at the scene and confirmed that the woman, Nancy Sampson, 61, of Greer, South Carolina, died from injuries sustained in the fall.

“Rescuers were able to locate Sampson approximately 150 feet below the overlook,” the release says. “Her body was recovered by first responders from the Reams Creek Fire Department, with assistance from the Mount Mitchell State Park Rangers and the Western North Carolina Volunteer Trauma Intervention Program.”

In a Facebook post, the Reems Creek Fire Department said crews rappelled more than 100 feet down the cliff to locate Sampson, and that MAMA 2 responded to the scene as well.

NPS officials say no other details will be released at this time.
