Kworld Trend | Monster Hunter Wilds is one of my favorite games of the year, but it was outsold by an eight-year-old Capcom game this quarter ,
February seems like a long time ago, but Monster Hunter Wilds has arrived with all the weight of an ancient dragon.
Strong review scores and big sales numbers gave us hope that the game would have the same kind of legacy as the (excellent) Monster Hunter World, but it would be fair to say that things didn’t turn out that way.
Monster Hunter Wilds was overtaken by Resident Evil 7 in the last quarter
PC performance has been a major issue since launch, with Capcom promising more fixes will come in Wilds’ winter patch, but the game (which sold 10 million copies in its first month) has also struggled to keep players invested with relatively thin post-game content additions.
As VGC reports, Capcom’s financial results paint a surprising picture for the franchise’s latest addition, which barely managed to crack the top 10 last financial quarter in terms of sales.
According to Capcom’s figures, Wilds sold less than Monster Hunter Rise last quarter, despite that game launching in 2021, while also falling short of sales for Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2 Remake, and Resident Evil 3 Remake, which launched in 2017, 2019, and 2020, respectively.
As VGC notes, Monster Hunter World has seen strong catalog sales since launch, coupled with a later PC release and its major expansion, Iceborne.
It’s also worth noting that every other game in the top 10 received significant discounts, which is why Devil May Cry 5 continues to move many units despite launching in 2019.
Capcom has already adjusted the roadmap for Monster Hunter Wilds post-launch content, with Title Update 4 scheduled for December. In addition to PC optimizations, there are plans to expand the Artian Weapon system, add a seasonal event, and introduce Gogmazios as a new endgame challenge.
For what it’s worth, I’d like to do more in Monster Hunter Wilds, but I think it’s still a great game (at least on PS5 Pro).
