Developers release new third-party mobile apps all the time. If you’re learning about birds, Merlin’s bird app at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is an app you can’t miss. The app’s new features provide great tools for bird watchers of all skill levels. Because being a novice birdwatcher can be particularly challenging, it is important to learn how it can help those who are just starting out. In this Birdwatching Basics post, I will provide a brief guide on how to use the Merlin app for bird watching in your backyard and beyond. A field guide in your pocket
At its most basic level, Merlin serves as a digital field guide to North American birds. In other words, it has a searchable database of information on birds in your area. Using the GPS on your phone, it will provide information on common birds in your area. Using the “Explore Birds” button from the home screen, you can browse through these species.
Just like in a field guide, you can see photos, descriptions, and maps to help you identify individual birds. The app will also provide lists of similar species to help you search for any obscure sightings. All this without the extra weight of the book! Taking it a step beyond field guides, the app allows you to listen to recordings of birdsong to help you identify them in the future.
Important note: While scientists may sometimes play bird songs to persuade wild birds to approach them, you should never do so without a permit. Playing a song of some kind to someone singing in its territory will stress the bird, which may interfere with nesting. Thus, it is never acceptable to use playing bird songs to entertain birds. Instead, enjoy the challenge of bird watching and find other ways to look good!
Ask the right questions
The number of species in a field guide can be overwhelming. Merlin can help narrow down your choices based on your feedback.
Another essential feature of Merlin is a questionnaire to help you narrow down your bird sightings to a list of the most likely suspects. This is great, because, especially for novice birdwatchers, a complete field guide full of birds can be somewhat daunting. For example, given the dozens of species of ducks that can be found in Georgia, I might not know where to begin if I saw a young brown duck in a local pond. To help with that, you can select “Start Bird ID” from Merlin’s main menu, and you’ll get 5 questions:
- Where did you see the bird?
- When did you see the bird?
- What is the size of the bird?
- What are the main colors?
- What was the bird doing (Was the bird…?)
Let’s explore these questions, how to answer them, and why they are important.
where
Knowing where you saw a particular species is a great first step in identifying it. This is true whether it is a plant, bird, fungus, mammal, or insect. This is because different species specialize in different types of habitats, or live in certain parts of the world. By describing natural spaces as different biomes or habitats , you can narrow down the species you are most likely to encounter. With Merlin, you can either let it locate you via GPS, or use a map to locate where you saw the bird. Merlin bird app download

Nature involves a lot of timing. Some species will only be present at certain times of the year . As a result, it is important to know exactly when you have seen your bird. Moreover, this question is best answered after determining where sighting occurs, because altitude and latitude affect the timing of nature . Here, you can tell Merlin approx what time of year you saw the bird, and it will narrow down its suggestions.
How big was it?
Knowing your bird’s size is a great place to start. However, even with good binoculars, it can be difficult to describe the bird’s size. For example, looking at the measurements given in the field guide, it can be difficult to tell if the thrush in a tree above you is 16 or 20 cm tall.
One thing I love about Merlin is that it offers things based on known bird sizes. Was she older than Robin? Was it smaller than a goose or a duck? This is an easy way to narrow things down without getting too specific. Merlin bird app download
What color?
Color is a major part of the bird world, and is one of the first field markers experienced birders use for identification. Merlin lets you select the colors you’ve seen on the bird to highlight some of the possible types.

One of my favorite things about watching wildlife is observing their behaviour. As it turns out, some behaviors can be diagnostic. In other words, certain behaviors are associated with specific species, and you can use them for identification. By describing what the bird was going for when you saw it, you can often narrow down your list even further. For example, was she flying a certain way, or perhaps singing? These details can be of great help.
Image and sound ID
The most exciting new features in the Merlin app use artificial intelligence (specifically machine learning ) to automatically recognize images or audio recordings of birds. This means that if you can get a picture of a bird, or hear it sing, Merlin can use a database of images and sounds to try to identify. The algorithm looks for similarities in the image or sound structure with other records in its database. Most importantly, it can also get better over time.
While it can be difficult to get a good picture of a bird on your phone, the portrait feature works great if you get a clear shot. However, I tend to use the Voice ID feature a lot, and I highly recommend it. When using the Voice ID feature, Merlin activates the microphone and records incoming sounds.
If he discovers songs he can identify, he will start listing the birds he hears. It will even highlight this bird in real time as it hears the sound. You can keep your recordings, as well as report these sightings to eBird if you keep lists of what you’ve seen.
This feature is great for helping you learn birdsong and calls in real time. It can also be an excellent way to test your skills! I usually wait before turning it on, unless I hear something that really puzzles me. This way, I can guess what genres I’m listening to, and then test myself and see how I’m doing.
