Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones addressed a controversial photo of himself that was recently revealed by The Washington Post.
In the photo, Jones can be seen standing in a group of white students trying to prevent six African American students from entering and integrating the school.
After Jones’ Thanksgiving game against the Giants, he captioned the photo, “That was 65 years ago.” I had no idea when I came forward what we were doing. It’s just a reminder to me of how to improve and do things the right way.

On Wednesday, November 23, the Washington Post ran a story with a photo centerpiece of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones as part of a group that was trying to prevent black students (the North Little Rock Six ) from entering North Little Rock High School on September 9, 1957.
It’s unclear if Jones was actively acting against segregation at the school, but a Washington Post story makes it clear that the photos indicate that Jones may have had to go a little extra mile to get around the North Little Rock Six to keep them from entering the school. So, it’s less intriguing, and more “effortless”.
In the photo, it is clear that Jones is looking out from behind an older group of students and whether or not he played a further role in the incident is unclear.

Jones hasn’t been very outspoken about racial issues since buying the Cowboys in 1989, unlike quite a few of his fellow owners over the years.
He has expressed objections to the NFL’s Rooney rule, which requires teams to interview at least one outside minority candidate for senior jobs, and has never hired a black coach or chief executive.

The Cowboy owner also objected to protests during the 2017 NFL season, when several African-American players rode to raise awareness of racist police practices.
He eventually rode with his entire team in September 2017 in a show that was choreographed while the national anthem was not being played.
“Our players wanted to make a statement about unity and we wanted to make a statement about equality,” Jones said in a post-match press conference.
They were fully aware that this statement, when made or when attempted to be made and partly an acknowledgment of our science, could lead not only to criticism but also to controversy.
