Who is Yusra and Sarah Mardini?
Yousra and Sarah Mardini are the two sisters that the film follows on their dangerous journey. They made the decision to flee the civil war in Syria and arrived in Turkey by plane with the aim of reaching Germany via Greece.
However, things started to go wrong when the dinghy they were sailing in, along with eighteen other people, got stuck in the Aegean Sea.
The two sisters leave the stranded boat and have to swim for three and a half hours to ensure the safety of the other passengers. The siblings were already good swimmers, and their years of training paid off, allowing them to survive three and a half hours in the ocean.
At only 17 and 20 years old when the accident occurred in 2016, the couple’s bravery kept the other passengers safe on board. The girls’ plan was to escape the war and apply for family reunification when they arrived. The entire journey would take twenty-five days to complete.
Yusra went on to compete in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and is now studying film and television production in California. In addition to her Olympic performances, Yusra is also a United Nations ambassador, author, and has met Barack Obama and the Pope.
Sarah had a controversial time, spending 107 days in prison on suspicion of smuggling migrants into Greece, along with alleged charges of espionage and money laundering. She was released on bail and is currently awaiting a court date to contest the charges.

With the facts as they stand, it’s not surprising that there was a lot of interest in the film rights, but the girls were initially reluctant to let the director document their journey. They actually decided not to make a movie but eventually relented when they felt it was time. Originally, Yousra rejected the movie idea because she wanted to focus on getting to the Olympics. However, when the right team to produce the film had been found, it was time to tell the story. Yousra is the Lebanese actor Natalie Issaand her sister Sarah Manal Issa. The two actors are also sisters which makes them the perfect choice for this movie.
