Is Max Meladze dead in The Recruit?

Plot of The Recruit

Owen Hendricks, who recently joined the CIA as a lawyer. During his early days, Owen becomes engaged to Max Meladze, a murderer in a Phoenix prison who threatens to release confidential information regarding the agency’s Eastern European spies to win freedom. Max’s proposal leads her to her release from prison and her reintegration into the agency as an asset back in Europe. The show’s first season ends with Max trying to get back to Belarus and the Russian mob sphere as a CIA asset. The CIA operation goes awry, threatening Max’s life. Is Max dead or alive?

After Max’s release from prison, she yearns to return to Belarus or, in her own words, “home,” even as a CIA asset. She meets with Lev to ask for his help in finding a gateway to enter the Russian mob, only to have their meeting interrupted by a group of gunmen, apparently led by Nichka Lashin. Even though the shooters do their best to kill Max, Owen manages to save her from Lev’s house. The duo then goes to meet Dawn, the officer in charge of the operation. However, before Dawn can meet them, they are abducted by Nichka, who reveals that she is Karolina, Max’s daughter who was thought to be dead. Before Max can talk to her, Karolina shoots her mother dead.

Although the show’s first season ends with no confirmation that Max is dead or alive, the chances of her surviving the gunshot are slim to none. Karolina’s decision to shoot Max without even a conversation shows how much she wants her mother dead. So even if Max manages to stay alive for a short time, it’s extremely unlikely that Karolina will bother to save his life. Since Owen is in Karolina’s custody, he may not be able to save Max soon enough, especially when he doesn’t even know where they are after being abducted by Karolina’s men.

Karolina tried to kill Max several times. After Max and Owen escape Lev’s house, the attorney lets the asset know that he saw Nichka among the shooters. Max reveals that Nichka was the one who tried to force the Russian Mafia council to kill her, indicating that Karolina always tried to see the end of her mother’s life. His unexpected attack when Lev and Max meet makes it clear that killing the latter is his priority. Given these factors, Max will most likely succumb to her gunshot wound if she is not yet deceased.
