the first love is what kids these days would describe as “ambience”. nine part Netflix The series is based on two songs from before Hikaru Utada – “First Love” and “Hatsukoi”, and they don’t seem more lively than that, do they?
This long-running romantic drama from Japan is anything but familiar, perhaps to its detriment. All the usual tones are present and accounted for, some unnecessarily drawn-out or hampered by an unnecessarily complex structure, but there is also some comfort in predictability. the first love He emits such feelings of giddy young love, painful partings, long absences, and sudden reconciliations in spades. It’s at least two episodes too long, but impressive in its construction, visuals, performances, and emotional intensity.
Yae Noguchi Love Story (Hikari Mitsushima) and Harumichi Namiki (Takeru Satoh) takes place over multiple time periods, switching between actors and — that word again — emotions as it goes. It can be confusing in its execution, and sometimes very wobbly in its focus. Yae dreams of being a flight attendant but is forced to face the aftermath of an accident affecting her short-term memory; Harumichi becomes a pilot in the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, which carries a lot of moral and social responsibility. They both drift together then apart and then together again in various circumstances, some out of their control and others driven by their own decisions, though most of them are, admittedly, too imaginative and made-for-television to be entirely buyable.
But the cast really sells all the ups and downs, helping the audience invest, and there’s a lot of surface-level beauty to take in if you think about it. The themes of love, responsibility, and destiny are well developed across the episodes, meaning that when it matters, the first love Can satisfy emotionally.
It takes a while to get there, though. I know I always complain about the length of shows, but at an age Lots of content, these things are important. They influence how people choose to consume things. the first love It doesn’t have enough story to fill nine hours, and that becomes apparent quickly. Once that idea settles into the plot, the beats start to feel a little repetitive, the flashbacks get a little rambling, the interactions a little jittery, etc., and so on, as if the show is simply slowing down in its runtime.
Obviously not to be too pessimistic. A healthy group of viewers are going to love and really relate to this, and that’s good for them. This cast’s efforts deserve attention, and word of mouth will pay off the first love. But I think it has a somewhat special appeal, and is mostly appropriate for big fans of the genre or the talent in question – those looking for a sleeper watch or something legitimately new will be mildly impressed but probably not entirely satisfied.
