Fallout 4’s Opening Is Hiding a Secret Most Players Overlook

Fallout 4 It may not be everyone’s favorite entry in the series, but it’s hard to deny that it’s filled with fun secrets and bits of story that add considerable depth to the post-apocalyptic universe created all those years ago.

Today, the series’ most famous phrase is undoubtedly “War Never Changes” – a commentary on the destruction humans are capable of wreaking on each other and a warning for those of us playing at home.

It features heavily in trailers for various Fallout properties and was actually first used in the original game. To fall in 1997, where actor Ron Perlman from boy from hell fame.

Fallout 4 is no exception, with the player character saying this during the opening creation scene in the bathroom mirror. In this case, however, the line hides a little secret that actually has a fun payoff at the end.

The war still hasn’t changed

When creating the character in Fallout 4you’ll spend your time watching the character and his partner as they have a really, really wholesome conversation before breakfast, before the bombs first drop.

Part of this conversation concerns a speech the player is about to give that evening at the Veteran’s Hall, in which he plans to deliver the famous quote about war.

As first pointed out by Fallout Films on Twitter/X, he obviously never got to give his speech because the nuclear attack ruined those plans, but you can still find a cute Easter egg tied to it some 210 years later when you wake up in 2287.

If you head to Fraternal Post 115, you can find the Veterans Hall where you were supposed to speak all that time ago. There you can find a terminal that refers to your character (whatever name they choose). You can also approach and interact with a nearby microphone, where you’ll say the words you were meant to share with other veterans more than two centuries ago: “War… War never changes.”

It’s a great callback to a moment that otherwise would have seemed pretty disposable, and it adds a nice in-universe story to one of the most iconic lines tied to the series. Does this mean that we will be able to see our character from Fallout 4 appearing on the Prime Video show as a soldier remains to be seen, but oh my god, would that be cool.
