To join the app, users must first join a wait list, after which they will receive a text with a link to download the app. Upon downloading, users will initially have access to a central ranked feed, but a beta test is underway for two added features.

Artifact New Features

One of the new features will show a feed of articles posted by people that the user chose to follow, including their commentary on the posts. The second feature is a direct-message inbox, allowing users to discuss the posts privately with friends.

Artifact: Similar to TikTok

Artifact’s features can be compared to TikTok, as it also uses an algorithmic approach to show content based on the user’s preferences. However, unlike TikTok, which focuses on videos, Artifact will display text-based content.

Advancements in Technology

Thanks to the transformer technology invented by Google in 2017, social media can now make predictions based on the user’s interests, without considering who they follow or their friends. This approach, as seen in TikTok, is what Artifact aims to bring to its text-only app.

Political Diversity

Artifact will include publishers from both ends of the political spectrum, but only those that adhere to quality editorial standards will be allowed to remain on the app. Artifact will work to remove outlets and posts that promote misinformation, exercising its own judgment on what can remain on the platform.
