Coy Gibbs, co-owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, son of team patriarch Joe Gibbs and father of NASCAR driver Ty Gibbs, has died at the age of 49, the racing team announced.

“It is with great sadness that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs (co-owner) passed away in his sleep with the Lord last night. The family appreciates all thoughts and prayers and asks for privacy at this time,” the team said Sunday afternoon via Twitter .

Joe Gibbs lost his other son, JD Gibbs, in 2019. He died, also at the age of 49, after a long battle with a degenerative neurological disease, according to NASCAR.

“It is with great sadness that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs (co-owner) passed away in his sleep with the Lord last night. Joe Gibbs has lost both of his sons. JD Gibbs died in 2019 of degenerative neurological disease, and was also 49 at the time of his death. Coy Gibbs succeeded his older brother as vice chairman of the family-run NASCAR organization.

He was 49 years old. A cause of death was not immediately released.

Gibbs, the son of co-owner Joe Gibbs and father of Xfinity Series winner Ty Gibbs, was at Phoenix Raceway on Saturday to witness his son’s championship.

“I always have his back as his dad,” Coy said on Saturday. “…Watching it today, just to see his determination…it definitely made me proud. It made my wife – we were both proud, just because he hammered and did his job. If he wants to do this, he will learn how to do that.”

A former Stanford football player and NFL assistant coach for Washington, Gibbs followed in his father’s footsteps, moving from football to the racing ranks as a driver before moving to the boardroom as an executive.
