Post-Christmas Ending at Mistletoe Farm Explained – Who’s the Town Caller? It first appeared in Ready Steady Cut.
We’re discussing the ending of the Netflix Christmas on Mistletoe Farm movie, which will contain spoilers.
Written and directed Debbie IsetAnd the Christmas at the mistletoe farm It tells the story of a single father’s journey to leave his career in London behind and embrace the joys of being a farmer. In the West Midlands, no less.
Movie synopsis from my review:
Matt Cunningham (Garnham) An estranged single father of five, he learns one day he’s the proud owner of the out-of-place West Midlands Mistleto Farm. His wife had previously died leaving the poor man having to balance raising five young children while appeasing his cruel cartoonish villain to his boss, Miss Fletcher (Jensen), Her motto is “At work, kids don’t count.”
Since Matt needs to get a very important job offer by Christmas Eve, he thinks that some fresh country air and being surrounded by rolling hills is all he needs to get those creative juices going. Of course, all five children fall in love with the small village of Cobbleton after meeting the farmer Pino (beige), who for some reason lives in the barn and the rest of the fun, annoying, close-knit community. Among the privileged villagers is a veterinarian turned love interest, Miss Ashley (Dresdale)Useless school teacher Miss Nerris (Sydney Isitt-Ager)BArry the Baker (who moonlights as a plumber and is played by David O’Leary)and the likeness of Father Christmas Town crier (played by Stephen Wickham). Some of the villagers don’t even have names and are simply referred to by their Disney nicknames like Grumpy, Sneezy and Happy, adding to the mystery of this West Midlands oasis of happiness.
Explaining the End of Christmas at the Mistletoe Farm – Who’s the Town Crier?
Despite spending most of the movie slowly falling for the charms of village life, Matt still decides to sell Mistletoe Farm to a group of evil developers who offer him an undisclosed large sum of money. No amount of goats, forced Christmas spirit, or even the sad faces of his five young children will convince him. However, when big developers arrive from London to sell the farm, Benno brings the whole village to protest, throwing rotten eggs at the two businessmen and even… gasping! …throws some slime at them. To make matters worse, after the developers pull out of the deal, Matt’s evil, soulless and soulless boss arrives in Gobbleton. And we need stress how evil this woman really is: until her trip to a West Midlands farm, Miss Fletcher did not even know what a sheep or a pig looked like. You read that correctly, the adult woman most likely in her forties had no idea what pigs looked like.
Of course, Miss Fletcher trips and falls, which results in her getting covered in some old-fashioned rustic mud. She pisses off poor Matt, who in a fit of rage kicks out poor Benno for ruining his life.
In the final chapter, Matt changes his mind about selling the farm after the school teacher gives him a good talk. Unfortunately, as he was going to cut down the Christmas tree, he left the gate open and all the farm animals escaped. Meanwhile, Benno puts on a suit, goes to London, and reads the big pitch Matt has written on paper in an effort to get his job back. The lovable farmer also finds the developers and tries to get the sale back on track.
Beano and the developers arrive in Cobbleton and join the farm animal rescue mission. Of course, Matt changed his mind about selling, but the evil developers already had his signature on the contract. Fear not, though, because Grumpy saves the day. As it turns out, Grumpy is not only a grumpy old man, but also an ex-lawyer who worked for Matt’s father. He reveals that Matt’s inheritance from the farm has a clause preventing him from ever selling the place. It remains unclear how many generations of the Cunningham family were supposed to live on the Magic Farm before anyone was allowed to sell the place.
In a last ditch effort to pull the heart strings, Christmas at the mistletoe farm Delivers two more twists. We learn that Matt’s father never wanted to give him up. It was his mother’s fault that he never received the letters and delivers to his father who had been sending him while he was growing up. All is not lost, as the town crier finally reveals his true identity as Matt’s long-lost father. Matt learns that the entire village has been in on the old man’s deception. Why pretend to be dead and potentially further traumatize his widowed son, who is struggling to raise five children on his own? family.
Prior to the film’s final musical number, Matt now happily dating his vet, he declines Miss Fletcher’s offer to get his job back and “come out” as a farmer and village person (yes, those exact words were used). The movie ends with all the villagers singing a parody of the village people YMCA.
