Soap opera star Sonya Eddy, best known for playing Epiphany Johnson on “General Hospital,” has died at 55, her business partner Tyler Ford confirmed in a statement to USA TODAY.

She was also remembered by fellow actress Octavia Spencer, who shared that “my friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night” without providing details of the cause of death.

“The world lost another creative angel,” Spencer captioned a photo of Eddy on Instagram Tuesday. “Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her. My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans!”

“General Hospital” executive producer Frank Valentini called the late actress “incredible.”

“I truly loved her not only as actress, but as a friend,” Valentini wrote on Twitter Tuesday. “The lights in the hub of the nurse’s station will now be a little dimmer. But her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set.”

Sonya Eddy (June 17, 1967 – December 19, 2022) was an American actress.

Eddy was born in Concord, California on June 17, 1967. She majored in theatre and dance at University of California, Davis and received her B.A. in 1992.

Eddy made her acting debut in the Ruby Dee’s play Zora Is My Name in 1990. Other stage credits included The Comedy of Errors. The Witch in Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods and Bloody Mary in South Pacific.

However, She moved to Los Angeles and appeared in such sitcoms as Married… with Children. The Drew Carey Show, Murphy Brown, Seinfeld and Home Improvement. From 2004 to 2005, she had a recurring role on Joan of Arcadia. In 2006, Eddy began playing Epiphany Johnson on General Hospital on a recurring basis. From 2007 to 2008, she was a regular cast member on the spin-off, General Hospital: Night Shift. From 2016 to 2019, she played Tammy in the truTV comedy series, Those Who Can’t.

Eddy first starred on the venerable ABC soap in 2006, starring as a nurse and mother of. Stan Johnson (played by Kiko Ellsworth) for over a decade. She later became a regular cast member on the prime time spin-off, “General Hospital: Night Shift.”
