On September 28, 1891, Myrtle Gonzalez was born in Los Angeles to parents of Mexican and Irish descent. Her talent was recognized at an early age, and she often sang soprano in church choirs and concerts before trying her hand at stage acting.

Myrtle Gonzalez got her real break when the film industry moved from New York to California, making her one of the first Latina actresses in Hollywood. In 1913, she made her movie debut in  The Yellow Streak and went on to work with the Vitagraph Company of America for a few years.

Born in Los Angeles, California on September 28, 1891, Gonzalez’s Mexican father worked as a retail grocer while her mother was a former opera singer with family roots that can be traced back to Ireland.

She starred in at least 78 silent-era motion pictures from 1913 to 1917, of which 66 were one- and two-reel shorts. She is considered to be the first Latina and Hispanic film star in Hollywood.

Gonzalez is best known for her role as Enid Maitland in Vitagraph’s six-reel feature drama The Chalice of Courage (1915) opposite William Duncan. A magazine writer described her as “the virgin white lily of the screen”.

Gonzalez appeared destined for stardom from an early age, having been taken in by her mother with a good soprano voice that saw her sing in a variety of local concerts, benefits, and church choirs.

However, its focus soon shifted to the world of cinema after the bulk of American film production moved from New York to Los Angeles, in part due to the region’s more diverse scenic landscapes, giving birth to what became known as Hollywood.

A native of Los Angeles, Gonzalez was perfectly positioned to take full advantage. After impressing in a few local plays, she joined the silent motion picture studio called the Vitagraph Company of America, where she went on to make her film debut in The Yellow Streak.
