Based on the true story of the last haunt in the Old West, Christian CamargoAdapted from the true story of Willie Boy, a Chemehuevi Desert Runner who is chased at length by a mob of lawmen after accidentally killing the father of his forbidden lover, Carlotta, is a very slow affair with many interesting ideas, contrasting points of view, and important elements. While the movie itself can’t keep the ducks in a row, we can help with that, so here’s our best effort at explaining what happened, why, and what it all means.
So, as explained The last chaseWillie Boy and Carlotta are in love, but they cannot be together because they are fifth generation cousins and thus break tribal law. Carlotta’s father, the shaman of the tribe, dies against the union, but when he tries to stop the couple from escaping, Willie Boy accidentally shoots and kills him, leading to a massive manhunt and widespread publicity.
Heading the search are Sheriff Wilson, a drunk who leads several of his men on the hunt along with a few other Native Americans who answer to a lawman named Hyde, who wants Willie Boy dead. There is also a reporter named Randolph who worms his way into the group so he can make front-page news, selling an entire stack of newspapers by scaring Willie Boy and painting the lawmen as heroes.
He explained the end of the last chase
The hunters are all on the hunt for different reasons, which causes a lot of disagreements between them, and this fragmented atmosphere is the main driver of the movie. Perhaps if they were all on the same page, they would have been more successful, but that’s just speculation. However, the elements begin to conspire against Willyboy and Carlotta really, when the latter is bitten by a snake and Willyboy is forced to leave her alone in order to try and find help.
Willyboy turns to Clara True, a white woman who has a close relationship with Carlotta thanks to her working with an agency and hearing about Willyboy through her. Medication and a warning are available, though Willie Boy is unable to return the former to Carlotta. Instead, she is shot by Hyde, who mistakes her for Willie Boy. She dies from a gunshot wound, and Hyde weeps over his terrible mistake.
Meanwhile, Randolph has been spinning Willie Boy as the story’s villain, printing lies about him drinking and praying to 14-year-old Carlotta, and trying to frame her death on him. However, the stress and tragedies of the chase begin to get to everyone. After Willie shoots the group, taking their horses, Sheriff Wilson informs him of Carlotta’s death and offers him the chance to turn himself in so he can say his goodbyes to her. In his anguish, Willie Boy turns his gun on himself but does not pull the trigger. Segundo discovered Willy but did not attempt to capture him, returning to the others to tell them he had escaped.
Declaring the manhunt to be more trouble than it’s worth, Sheriff Wilson orders everyone home. With Randolph’s help, they set up a picture – Big Jim (Jason Momoa) plays Willy – which means Willy is dead, which we actually see the real version of as the movie ends. We also learned that according to reports, Willy spent years in seclusion after a hunt before eventually succumbing to tuberculosis.
