Some events from the ninth part of the seventh episode
Aesop: The plot of the episode with the breakdown of Ruby and John offers a little:
everyone has their limits and no one can be relied upon to handle everything – including or perhaps especially people in positions of power or leadership. Even the most competent and optimistic people will fall apart from putting too much on their shoulders for too long.
Repressing negative emotions is not a healthy way to deal with them and failing to process. Or process them in a healthy way will eventually result in anyone blowing up and criticizing others. Even people they care about.
Moving Inanimate Object: Paper Pleasers are vivid origami stars. As fragile and vulnerable as you’d expect living pieces of paper to be.
Bait-and-Switch: At first, the recurring disasters in Paper Pleaser Village are taken as too unintelligent papers to live, with Jaune constantly having to run around and save her from herself. However, the Purple Leaf eventually reveals the truth: they have reached the end of their goal and want to go up, but Jaune wouldn’t let them, so they’ve been creating disasters to try and die.
Big Dam’s plot: The Paper Pleasers try to break down the dam every day so the water will come up to them, and they eventually succeed.

Call-Back: During Robby’s yelling, when she yells at Weiss, she talks about finding “someone who doesn’t screw everything up,” a reference to Weiss’ early attacks on Robby being a lead in Volume 1. When she yells to Yang about “smiling all over” and “You gotta stay positive,” she references Yang’s pep talk in Volume 8, where she tells Ruby that they can’t stick to blind optimism, but they need hope.
Cliffhanger: An attack by The Walkers kills all the members of the Paper Pleasers, and Ruby finally lashes out at her friends and leaves. All WBY and Jaune can do is watch the rest of his village flood.
Condescending Compassion: Jaune’s patronage of leaf lovers is genuine, if based on his own desire to protect someone. But because of his beliefs about tree and ascension. As well as his negative experiences with other avatars, he considers them too unintelligent to know. What is best for themselves and protects them from what they want most. The Paper Pleasers don’t think badly of Jaune, though they keep trying to climb up despite his efforts.
Content warning: The episode contains traumatic subject matter, likely due to the Paper Pleasers’ attempts to die and the trauma of Ruby and Jaune.

Designer: The Paper Pleasers, despite Jaune’s best efforts to “protect” them and the. Paper Pleaser acknowledge they have no reason to expect anything to come from their efforts. Continue to make multiple daily attempts to climb. Finally succeeding while Jaune and the RWBY team are distracted by a fight Jabberwalkers Neo.
Title with double meaning: The Perils of Paper Houses can refer to literal paper. Settlements of origami squishies, which are extremely fragile and liable to be destroyed. At almost any moment (although these incidents are later revealed to be their own attempts at Ascension).
On the other hand, the title of the episode also carries a metaphorical explanation: the perils of maintaining the cheer front for too long. As both Robbie and John are finally pushed to their breaking points and end up unleashing. Doing it all their pent-up frustration and despair on their friends.
