What is the blue lock?
Written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura, Blue Lock is a Japanese Soccor manga that has been published in Kodansha’s Weekly Shounen Magazine since August 2018. The series has been collected in 19 volumes to date and is still ongoing.
An animated film from Studio 8Bit is scheduled to premiere in October 2022. The series has also inspired a spin-off manga titled “Blue Lock: Episode Nagi”.
After failing to win the World Cup, there is turmoil in the Japanese soccer community. Many of the sport’s older sponsors aren’t fazed by the lack of trophies, but newcomer Anri Thierry is furious – and determined to fix what she sees as a problem with the Japanese players. To that end, she enlists freelance coach Jinpachi Igo, who devises a bizarre but drastic plan: He takes three hundred of the best young soccer players in the country, sends them to a state-of-the-art training facility, and shrinks them until he has the absolute best striker in the nation. Before the match, Isagi’s team discusses their strategy and realizes that he will have to play the crucial role in ensuring that his teammates get along with each other. Interestingly, when the topic of choosing a player should they win come up, the three choose three different players who show their conflicted approach to the game. But despite this, they put aside their differences and prepare for the important match.
As he walks onto the court to play the decisive match against Team Reo, Chigiri, and Kunigami, Isagi feels that he doesn’t feel fear anymore. He realizes that his performance in the previous match is probably the main reason behind his confidence. Meanwhile, Rego and his teammates are also excited about the decisive match. The Rio team came up with a strategy in which they would closely guard Barrow until he would make the usual corners of the shooting range to score a goal. Since Kunigami is physically strong, he is able to hold his position and succeed in not giving Barou any space. Meanwhile, Isaigi constantly pleads for his teammate to pass the ball but as he expected, Barrow refuses to do so. Ryo notices this and decides to use this to his advantage by surrounding Barrow. Two players are naturally too much for Barrow, who ends up losing the ball to Ryo.

As Nagi is on offense ahead of the other end of the field, Reo and Kunigami advance with the ball to score with Isagi as the only defender. Isagi tries to analyze Reo’s movements to see if he should try to score himself or pass the ball to Kunigami. He eventually seems to pass in Kunigami’s direction but it turns out he gave the ball to Chigiri who was running in from behind.
Although Chigiri reaches the ball, Nagi follows him closely. He has to slow down a bit to get possession of the ball and Nagy tries to take advantage of this opportunity to close the distance. In the end, however, it turns out to be a useless exercise as Chigiri’s acceleration on the field is unparalleled at Blue Lock.
