Drew Griffin, CNN’s award-winning senior investigative correspondent, died Saturday after a long battle with cancer, his family told the network. He was 60 years old.

According to CNN, Griffin has worked on hundreds of stories and multiple documentaries over nearly two decades on the CNN Network’s investigative team. His reporting has won awards such as Emmys, Peabodys and Murrows.

Among Griffin’s most notable assignments was a year-long investigation that uncovered delays in medical care that contributed to patient deaths at Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals nationwide. His team’s reports led to the resignation of the VA Secretary, which was followed by the passage of federal legislation and a fundamental change in the way veterans’ appointments are handled.
Griffin’s other reports included investigations into sexual assault allegations against Uber drivers, fraud allegations against Trump University, and reports that dispelled myths of widespread voter fraud, among many others.
Patricia DiCarlo, executive producer of CNN’s investigative unit who worked alongside Griffin for nearly a decade, said in a CNN report on his death that “Griffin was an outstanding writer who turned plays into “compelling and unmissable TV stories”. Originally from Chicago, Griffin launched his journalism career as a reporter/cameraman for WICD-TV in Champaign, Illinois, and has worked for television stations in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Washington. He joined CBS 2 News in Los Angeles in January 1994.
He is survived by his wife Margot, three children and two grandchildren.
