One Piece by Eiichiro Oda is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most important manga of all time, an epic story with vast world-building and a complex sense of history and lore. It’s also a story that would have been impossible to make into a live-action series.
Aside from the formidable task of adapting an ongoing story with over 1,000 issues, One Piece is known for its goofy cartoonish visuals, tone, and sense of humor – like a Looney Tunes-style gag where characters’ eyeballs pop when they are. surprised.

The difficulties in adapting the source material, combined with Netflix’s history of missteps in adapting manga to the small screen (remember Death Note? or Cowboy Bebop?), means that the odds are stacked against a new live-action One Piece movie. We begin, just like in the manga and anime, with the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, facing his execution by the World Government. Before being brutally executed (actually, with two blades in the back? A little above the top), Roger uttered a message that would usher in the Golden Age of Piracy: “My treasure is in your hands for you to find.” Immediately hundreds of ships sailed from the site of Roger’s execution to search for the honorary piece.

The first episode, “Romance Dawn”, begins with a lively adventure-style narration from Ian McShane, who explains that this world is full of pirates, all chasing adventure on the high seas. But we are not concerned with pirates in general, but with one pirate in particular. Not Luffy – not yet, anyway – but Gold Roger (Michael Dorman), who has finally been caught and faces execution in Lugo Town. There is no way out for him, and he knows it, so instead he uses his final words to issue a call to action: “Free yourselves, go to the seas, my treasure is in your hands to find.” That treasure, of course, is the titular One Piece, and the potential is enough to spark a riot among the audience, which enrages Vice Admiral Garp (Vincent Regan), and ushers in a new age of piracy.
22 years later, the treasure is still not there, but not for long if Monkey D. Luffy has anything to say about it. The future self-proclaimed Pirate King sets out to the seas without a crew in order to track down the legendary treasure, but finds himself in trouble almost immediately when his water-less boat leaks, and unfortunately for someone who wants to build a life on the seas, he can’t swim. In just his first scene, Godoy shows why he was the perfect person to take on the ever-optimistic Luffy, showing cartoonish enthusiasm in every line he delivers.
S01E01: “Dawn of Romance”
Synopsis: Monkey D. Luffy, an optimistic young pirate who dreams of finding the One Piece, sets out in search of the loyal crew he needs to sail the vast oceans. His journey begins when he helps Coby, a ship’s laborer forced into slavery, to escape from an unwanted situation. While in Shell City, Luffy meets Roronoa Zoro, a famous pirate hunter, and Nami, a master thief, and the three form a fragile alliance.
