Heartstopper fans have long hailed the near-perfect adaptation of the upcoming graphic novel series on the small screen.

The series, now in its second season, follows Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring’s budding teen romance, the complications surrounding coming out, and the challenges their friends encounter along the way.

The two are now officially friends, but coming to his awful school friends, homophobic brother and estranged father proves to be more difficult for Nick, played by Kate Connor, than he expected.

In the third episode, he tries to build up the courage to go out to his friends at a game of rugby. Unfortunately, after falling ill, his plan falls apart and he returns home with Charlie (Joe Locke).

Here, Osman added, in a “beautiful” scene between the two, “which doesn’t exist in comics at all.” In an interview with Metro, Osman talked through the scene and why she was excited to see it brought to life.

“It’s just a quiet scene where Nick and Charlie are having a conversation,” she said, “but it’s kind of a huge turning point in their relationship and their understanding of each other.

“It’s performed so beautifully by Kit and Joe. I’m really excited for people to see it because it’s going to be a surprise.”

During the scene, Nick apologizes to Charlie for not coming out confident and quick, but his friend assures him that he “has nothing to apologize for”.

Charlie continues, “I think there’s this idea that when you’re not straight you have to tell all your friends and family right away. Like you owe them, but you don’t.

“Obviously, I want you to make it clear when and how you want it to happen, and if that takes too long, that’s totally fine.”

The moment seems particularly poignant considering Connor’s real-life experience being forced to come out on social media last year after fans accused him of solicitation.

Besides Nick’s troubles, season two also explores Charlie’s complicated relationship with food, Tao and Ellie’s feelings for each other, Tara and Darcy taking their relationship to the next stage and Isaac’s journey.

Heartstopper season two is streaming on Netflix now.

Is Heartstopper Season 2 Based On A Book?

While details surrounding the new season remain muted such as the technical skills of Fisayo Akinade (Mr. Ajayi), fans can get a taste of what’s to come by reading Alice Osman’s beloved graphic novel series – especially Volume 3.

“Season 2 is based on Volume 3,” Osman told Tudum at Heartstopper. “So we had a good foundation. But there isn’t enough in the book for a full season of television, so a lot of new things had to be invented.”

So it’s safe to say that summer 2022 “was a very intense summer of writing and presenting together.”

In the video, Connor adds that fans can rest assured that “Alice has some great scripts for us,” and that she “looks cool and fresh.” Overall, it’s “just a different look from the first season”.
