Police are investigating a shooting at Jefferson Mall that left one person hospitalized.
The shooting was reported sometime around 5pm on Monday. Police said no shots were fired inside the mall.
A fight took place inside the mall and then shots were fired in the parking lot, according to police.
Officials said one person was taken to hospital in critical condition. They said the victim was a male in his late teens.
Police said it was not a random act and that the people involved knew each other.
At this time, the police said they could confirm that a shooter was present and that the suspect was on the loose.
They also said there was no active shooter. The scene is secured, but they are asking people to avoid the area.
The report of the shooting came around 4:45 p.m. at the Outer Loop mall in Okolona. LMPD said the scene was safe until 5:25 p.m
Lt. Col. Steve Healy of LMBD said the altercation between two people who knew each other started inside the mall. A man in his late teens was shot outside the mall by a male suspect who fired several shots.
“No one was hurt as far as we know now,” Healy said. “We’re still going through video of that to determine exactly how many people were involved. We know we had one shooter and one victim.”
The victim was transferred to the university hospital in critical condition.
Shoppers were sheltered in stores after the shooting as LMPD’s SWAT team cleared the mall. Healy said there would be a “central collection point” near the food court for people who were in the mall.
“While they’re doing the interviews and making sure everybody’s okay, and then they’re going to nominate them,” Healy said. “We will make sure that everyone inside the mall, once they clear each individual store, and then they will be able to exit the mall.”
